What a show! The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony delivered a program packed with surprises, comedy, and yes, drama. “12 Years a Slave” the brutal drama of a free American black man’s ordeal of being kidnapped and forced into slavery, was shut out of every award — except the biggest of the night — Best Motion Picture Drama.
“American Hustle,” about couple of con artists forced to work a sting operation for the FBI, won three major trophies: Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy(Amy Adams), and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Jennifer Lawrence).
Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy went to Leonardo DiCaprio, the star of “The Wolf on Wall Street,” about the real-life rise and fall of Wall Street stockbroker, Jordan Belfort.
Speaking of comedy, gotta mention the terrific hosting by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. They were sharp, funny, and dress to the nines. The duo has signed on to host next year’s Golden Globes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Some other surprises: Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama was picked up by Matthew McConaughey for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club.” Jared Leto won the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for “Dallas Buyers Club.” It was the first Golden Globe for both McConaughey and Leto. “Dallas Buyers Club” is based on the true story of AIDS patient, Ron Woodroof who smuggled into Texas unapproved drugs for the disease.
Also, first year TV cop spoof, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” shocked with two wins: Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy (Andy Samberg). More on the show here. Full list of winners here.
