Caltrans is planning a shutdown of a section of the I-5 freeway in Burbank this weekend. The “5” is the nation’s busiest interstate, according to U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
The upcoming closure is part of the ongoing Empire Project, which involves a series of improvements to the I-5 in Burbank between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street. Those improvements include: carpool lanes, elevated railroad tracks, reconfigured ramps, a new interchange at Empire Avenue, reconstruction and widening of the Burbank Boulevard Bridge.
Lane closures on the I-5 ,between Lincoln and Buena Vista streets, will begin tonight at 11:59 p.m. All lanes along that stretch of the freeway will be shutdown by 2 a.m. and remain that way until 4 a.m. During the shutdown, crews reportedly will be removing overhead utility lines as part of the Empire Project.
