DMV illustrations of vintage license plates from 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s
The California DMV is offering something special for the drivers of vintage vehicles and they’re going fast. This week, the Department of Motor Vehicles began accepting applications for the California Legacy License Plate Program. Under the program, motorists who drive classic vehicles, from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, now will get a chance to purchase replicas of license plates issued during those time periods.
Each plate cost $50. The DMV is taking pre-orders up to 7, 500 for each category. You have until January 1, 2015 get your pre-order form mailed into the proper address. See details here. You will not be able to buy these special plates at DMV field offices or at the AAA offices.
The most popular specialty plates are the ones from 1960s with the black background and yellow letters.The DMV has already reached the maximum for these popular plates. The department will soon be processing the pre-orders and will be sending out the plates in the next few months, according to a news release from Assemblyman Mike Gatto‘s office.
In 2012, Assemblyman Gatto introduced a bill AB 1658, which established the California Legacy License Plate Program. Gatto reportedly wanted to do something to show appreciation for”…those who preserve California’s classic-car heritage.”

“Aside from not salting our roads, California doesn’t often do much for automobile enthusiasts. This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design, Gatto said in the news release.
Gatto, a Democrat, represents the 43rd District, which includes Burbank, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose, and the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Atwater Village, East Hollywood, Franklin Hills, Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake.
