More hot temperatures for Burbank and the San Fernando Valley. Yesterday the high hit 100 in the Media City and that could happen again today. No relief in sight for the weekend. The weather service has issued an excessive heat warning for the San Fernando Valley from 1 p.m. this afternoon through Sunday at 8 p.m.
The weather service put out this warning: “The prolonged heat wave will bring the risk of heat related illness through the weekend. Those at highest risk include children .. the elderly … and pets without adequate shelter. The heat will bring extra demand for electricity across the region … increasing the threat of power outages.”
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued a heat alert for the local valleys through Sunday: “… it is critically important to never leave children, elderly people, or pets unattended in homes with no air conditioning and particularly in vehicles, even if the windows are ‘cracked’ or open, as temperatures inside can quickly rise to life-threatening levels. If you have an elderly or infirm neighbor without air conditioning, make sure that they get to a cooling center or other air-conditioned space between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.” said Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, Interim Health Officer, Los Angeles County in a news release.
As a result of that heat alert, the City of Burbank announced the Buena Vista Library, 300 North Buena Vista Street, will be open as a cooling center Saturday 10 a.m.until 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Also, Burbank residents are being advised to seek shelter in other temperature-controlled environments like the Burbank Town Center Mall and local movie theaters.
