Today President-elect Barack Obama rode the rails from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. with family, friends, supporters, and the media. Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife Jill boarded the train in Wilmington, Delaware. Thousands of people braved brutally cold weather to cheer on the new president and his administration of change. The whistle stop tour followed part of the journey taken by Abraham Lincoln to his own inauguration ceremony in 1861.
President-elect Barack Obama made several stirring speeches about our history, our hopes, our dreams, and the work ahead.
In Philadelphia Obama said: “… we should never forget that we are the heirs of that first band of patriots, ordinary men and women who refused to give up when it all seemed so improbable; and who somehow believed that they had the power to make the world anew. That is the spirit that we must reclaim today.”
