“American Hustle” has more of an Oscar edge today after winning the top honor at the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center in L.A. last night. The ensemble film won the Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture award — over “12 Years a Slave,” “August: Osage County,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” and “Lee Daniel’s ‘The Butler.'”
In the Oscar race, both “American Hustle” and “12 Years a Slave,” have 10 nominations each including Best Picture. Now that the SAG-AFTRA union has handed its most significant award to “American Hustle” that film moves into the lead for Oscar.
However, SAG did honor “12 Years a Slave” with the supporting actress in a motion picture award. Lupita Nyong’o, wearing a stunning Gucci gown, picked up that trophy for her performance as an abused slave. Nyong’o beat out some tough competition: Jennifer Lawrence “American Hustle,” Julia Roberts “August: Osage County,” June Quibb “Nebraska,” and Oprah Winfrey “Lee Daniel’s’The Butler.'”
In a repeat of the Golden Globes motion picture awards, Jared Leto took home the award supporting actor Actor in a film for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club,” lead movie actor trophy went to Matthew McConaughey for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club,” and Cate Blanchett walked away with the lead actress in a motion picture award.
