A documentary about the power of music and its ability to touch the lives of people suffering from memory loss is set to be screened here in Burbank tomorrow. “Alive Inside: A story of Music and Memory” is by Michael Rossato-Bennett and it won the 2014 Audience Award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
The film”chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music,” according to its website. “Alive Inside” will be shown at the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, 501 South Buena Vista Street on Thursday, August 13. The event is sponsored by the medical center and Leeza’s Care Connection — the foundation of author, radio, and TV personality Leeza Gibbons.
ComForCare in Glendale is hosting the event. A news release says the event will highlight the organization’s “DementiaWise initiative, which focuses on training caregivers in the use of meaningful activities, such as a patient’s favorite music.”

The owner of the facility, Chad Marshall, described his experiences in the release: “I’ve been helping seniors and their families for seven years and of all the inspiring things I’ve seen, none compare to the look on the face of someone with signs of dementia after listening to their old favorite song,” said Marshall. “The best word to describe that look is: reawakening. It’s like they’re transported back decades to when they first heard the song. Family members who have loved ones exhibiting signs of dementia are astonished at how alert and expressive they become after simply listening to a few cherished songs.”
The event begins at 5:45 p.m. and the documentary screens at 6:30 p.m. Following the film a panel of neuroscience, music ,and Alzheimer’s experts reportedly will answer questions from the audience.
