An urgent call went out in Burbank today for 150 bicycles for some hopeful kids. Former Burbank City Council member/volunteer, Dave Golonski, made the plea at today’s Burbank Coordinating Council meeting/luncheon at the Little White Chapel on North Avon Street here in B-town.
During an update on the annual Holiday Basket Program, Golonski announced the BCC had received requests for 150 bicycles from parents unable to make this Christmas wish come true for their children. Golonski admitted “…we didn’t expect that kind of response.” So now the program has less than a week to come up with more than 100 bikes in time for the delivery of the Holiday Baskets this Saturday, December 12.
The BCC is asking the public for donations of bicycles that can quickly and easily be refurbished or recycled as well as brand new bikes. Ages of the children range from 2 years-old to 17. So far 493 families have turned in applications to get the special baskets, which are filled with food, treats, clothes, and toys. Golonski predicted “we’re going to be right on target” to reach 523 families by Saturday’s delivery date. More than 100 families have yet to be adopted by individuals, groups, or businesses, so the BCC will be building baskets for them during the week. Volunteers are needed for Wednesday, December 9, at the Little White Chapel 2 p.m. until 9 p.m., Friday, December 11, Little White Chapel and George Washington Elementary School 2 p.m. – 9 p.m, and delivery day at Washington Elementary near the lunch shelter starting at 7 a.m. If you want to pitch in please call (818) 216-9377 or email ccholidaybaskets@aol.com .
