In a surprise move, the Burbank City Council went outside City Hall for the selection of an interim city manager. Ken Pulskamp, the city manager of Santa Clarita, has agreed to take on that position. Pulskamp announced his retirement in August and his last day there will be November 30. Pulskamp has more than 30 years in city government.
Pulskamp will go to work as the interium city manager in B-town on December 3. Again, passing over City Hall insiders, Burbank Fire Chief, Ray Krakowski, will step in as acting city manager, until Pulskamp comes on board.
Here’s the official press release sent out yesterday afternoon by Burbank PIO, Drew Sugars.
BURBANK, Calif. (October 22, 2012) – The City of Burbank has reached a tentative agreement with Ken Pulskamp to serve as Interim City Manager after the departure of Manager Mike Flad who is leaving to take the City Manager job for the City of South Gate.
Mr. Pulskamp will assume the interim position following his upcoming retirement on November 30, 2012 from the City of Santa Clarita where he has served as City Manager for 10 years and as the City’s Assistant City Manager for 15 years. Ken has 35 years in city management.
“I am very much looking forward to working with the City Council, staff and community in the City of Burbank,” commented Ken Pulskamp.
“The Council worked hard to find a Manager with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully lead the transition of our City. They have found that in Ken Pulskamp, a person I respect deeply and within whom I have every confidence,” says Mike Flad.
Mr. Pulskamp will start on December 3, 2012. Until that time, the Burbank City Council has appointed Fire Chief Ray Krakowski to be the acting City Manager.
Both selections received the unanimous support of the City Council, which issued this statement regarding the hiring of Ken Pulskamp: “The City of Burbank is fortunate to have found a very experienced and accomplished person to guide the City over the upcoming months as it embarks on the process of recruiting a permanent City Manager.”
