Thousands of Easter fans, young and old, got up early and took part in the revived Spring Egg-Stravaganza at McCambridge Park on North Glenoaks Boulevard in Burbank last Saturday. While parents and onlookers snapped photos, kids dashed for Easter eggs, hung out with the Easter bunny, got some golfing lessons, and played other games.
Burbank Park, Recreation ad Community Services Director, Judie Wilke, and her staff were opposed to bringing back the long-running Easter tradition. However, last month the city council voted to bring back the Spring Egg-Stravagazana. Wilke and her team had about three and a half weeks to organize and publicize the event. They did it!
Chloe Hunt, a Burbank camp counselor, says the phones in the department were ringing off the hook last Friday: “We had a lot of people call in asking time and ages and stuff like that.” Hunt was among the eight city staffers and 30-to-40 volunteers who worked the event. They did an amazing job.
There has been grumbling from some city staffers and officials, that folks from outside Burbank brought their kids to this event in the past. Councilman David Gordon, who voted to bring back the Spring Egg-Stravaganza, says it’s a goodwill event, which shows Burbank in a good light: “…let them all come.”
I did a random poll, and I would say 80 percent of the people I asked “where are you from?” said “Burbank.”
There were three egg hunts, age 3 and under, 4-6, and 7-10. For each hunt, 14-1500 colorful plastic eggs, filled with candy and stickers, were scattered on a field. I watch two of these. Those plastic eggs were all scooped up in less than a minute.
Another popular attraction, a sit down with the Easter Bunny. Some kids were all smiles, while others bawled their eyes out during the encounter with the big bunny.
Meanwhile, the Debell Golf course tried to show it was kid friendly by offering some golfing pointers to the youngsters.
