Sample ballots for the November 4 Statewide Special Election are in the mail. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office announced last week that the mailing process had begun. The sample ballot is being sent out to all registered voters in the county. The only measure on that ballot is Proposition 50, which makes temporary changes to congressional districts. Recent polls show the majority of Californians support it.
Governor Gavin Newsom is leading the push for Proposition 50, also known as the Election Rigging Response Act. Newsom and a coalition of lawmakers and organizations are campaigning for the redistricting changes to favor Democrats. They say it is necessary to combat President Trump’s pressuring of states like Texas to change their congressional districting maps to give Republicans the advantage. Trump’s goal is to improve the chances of Republicans holding onto a slim margin in the House of Representatives during the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
The official vote-by-mail ballots for the special election are scheduled to be mailed out starting October 2. Early vote centers will open in late October.
