Burbank Mayor, Jess Talamantes, suffered a health episode over the weekend. After attending the Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony on the steps of Burbank City Hall last Saturday night, December 3, the councilman reportedly went to dinner at Don Cuco restaurant on East Orange Avenue. It is there that the mayor started feeling some discomfort, went to the men’s room, and collapsed! At 8:30 p.m. paramedics reportedly transported Talamantes to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center over at Buena Vista Street and Alameda Avenue.
It was determined the mayor had a syncopal episode, another way of saying he fainted. At the hospital they ran some tests, which reportedly came back normal. As a precaution, the mayor was kept overnight for observation. By late Sunday, the mayor was out and about, ah, being the mayor. The explanation from City Hall is that he “got dehydrated” as a result of a busy week of activities.
Talamantes was first elected to the city council in 2009. He’s serving as mayor for the second time. As mayor, Talamantes has a full schedule of activities, probably for the next several months. Also, he’s submitted the required nomination papers to run for another term in the upcoming city elections. So Talamantes will be campaigning for re-election along with his other duties. You gotta wonder if Saturday’s health hiccup was a warning of something more serious and whether Talamantes has the stamina for another four-year term on the council.

This afternoon City Clerk, Zizette Mullins, sent out a press release with the names of the candidates who have qualified for the all mail ballot for the 2017 Burbank elections. On the city council, candidates are competing for three seats. On the school board, two seats. The city clerk and city treasurer are running unopposed.
