Internet giant, eBay, is the latest victim of a massive cyber attack. The global marketplace company posted an announcement on its website today “…  asking all eBay users (both buyers and sellers) to change their passwords…” There reportedly are 145 million eBay users worldwide.

The security breach apparently occurred sometime between “late February and early March” of 2014, but only detected two weeks ago, according to Forbes. The hackers got into the corporate network through “a number of employee log in credentials.” The company acknowledges, “.. a database containing encrypted password and non-financial data was compromised.” The cyber thieves got access to information such as customer date of birth,  names, email addresses, physical addresses, and phone numbers. eBay insists there is “no evidence that  any customer financial or credit card information was involved.”

eBay says it has “shut down” the unauthorized access to its website and installed new security measures. Also, the company is “working with law enforcement and leading security experts” to investigate the hack. Once the results of that probe are revealed, we will know the true extent of the break in and how much damage it caused.
