Eric Garcetti is caught up in a tight run-off with Wendy Greuel for mayor of Los Angeles. That’s why it was a little odd to see an “Eric Garcetti for mayor” sign sticking in the lawn of a resident on South Griffith Park near West Verdugo Avenue here in Burbank a few days ago.
No, Media City residents cannot vote in that mayoral election. If we could, Wendy would get my vote. Still, the Garcetti sign is food for thought. A lot of controversy and tension, as well as debate and bickering by residents and city officials, have occurred over how the mayor is selected in B-town.
Per the city charter, it is left up to the members of the city council to annually select one of their own to serve as mayor. At times, that process has been flawed, unfair, and downright discriminatory.
So voters aren’t directly involved in picking the mayor of Burbank. I really wish we were because that would make the mayor the choice of the voters rather than the selection of a few.
