I went to “by CHLOE.” vegan restaurant in Silver Lake because of Chef Chloe. She is a vegan celebrity who is known for her amazing vegan recipes and dishes at her New York City restaurant “by CHLOE.” For months, there’s been a lot buzz about this chain coming to the Southland. I wanted to be one of the first vegans to check it out and give my feedback! So, I was there for the grand opening last Tuesday, May 31, when the doors opened at 11 a.m.
The restaurant is located inside of 365bywfm at 2520 Glendale Boulevard. This is a discounted Whole Foods Market that just opened up in Silverlake late last month. The restaurant is very cute inside with a friendly vibe. Everything is 100% vegan and kosher.
Spotted among the visitors, musician Tony Kanal. He is the bass guitarist of the group No Doubt and former boyfriend of pop star Gwen Stefani.
I got the chance to speak with Chef Chloe and she told me: “We’re so excited… It’s a day we’ve been waiting for for awhile.” When asked what her favorite item on the menu was she stated: “Ooh I really like the vegan mac n cheese. It’s super good.” I tried the vegan mac-n-cheese with bacon, which is one of Chloe’s most popular creations. It was absolutely delicious! The vegan bacon is made from mushrooms and the flavor from these mushrooms is what gives this dish its popularity. It is also sprinkled with tasty bread crumbs which just puts it over the top!
I also tried the pesto meatball sub which comes on a hoagie type of roll and it was bursting with flavor. It was crispy with a meatball texture and definitely enough to fill you up!
I also had a chance to sample a Chloe cupcake, which looks exactly like the old-fashioned Hostess cupcakes I grew up on. It was sooooooo incredibly moist and the frosting melted in my mouth. It was almost better than sex! Almost…
The last item I tried was the kale artichoke dip. Definitely a favorite. It was like having a warm spinach artichoke dip minus the dairy. It came with these fresh perfectly textured tortilla chips. The dip was warm and chunky and very filling. It was also sprinkled with these delicious bread crumbs. Definitely something I could see myself ordering for a party.
If you ate any of this food with your eyes closed you would never assume it was vegan. You should definitely try it and see for yourself how delicious and fun meat free eating can be.
As for the prices at by Chloe., you can expect to pay approximately $9.00 plus for an a la carte item such as sandwiches, and salads. Desserts are around $3.50 each and up and side items such as mac n cheese range from $4.00 plus and up. An average meal with sandwich, side item, and beverage will definitely run you close to $20.00.
