Google leaped into the ebook market in a big way today. The Internet search giant launched Google eBooks and is now the largest ebook provider in the world. The site boasts about having “… nearly 3 million free ebooks and hundreds of thousands of titles …” that are for sale at the Google eBookstore.
The Google blog says Google eBooks was designed to be “open” — meaning it’s compatible with a number of devices —from laptops to smart phones to e-readers — but not Amazon’s Kindle. Google is out to challenge the leaders in the online book market — Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.
The highly anticipated Google eBooks site, a venture that began as Google Editions, is available only in the U.S. now — but international editions are planned for next year.
