A big turnout for the grand opening yesterday of the 1920s Hair and Nail Bar in Burbank. Family, friends, clients, as well as city and Burbank Chamber of Commerce officials showed up to nosh on scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, sweets, and pastries as well as to toast the new venture.

The owners, hairstylist, Diana Azarian, and son, Raffael Nahapetian, opened the hair salon and nail shop in mid January, while the renovation was still underway. Nahapetian, who has a degree in marketing and a knack for social media, created the 1920s theme and supervised the construction at 1920 West Olive Avenue.

Burbank mayor, Dr. David Gordon, and vice-mayor, Bob Frutos, presented the owners, Azarian and Nahapetian, and Azarian’s husband, Raffik Nahapetian, with certificates of recognition for the new business, one from the city of Burbank and the other, Los Angeles County.

The day after the celebration, Azarian and stylist, Christina Earl Boyer, were back working at their stations. Earl Boyer, a former Burbanker, now jets in from Washington state for 10 days each month to take care of a dedicated list of long time clients. Also, manicurist, Celia Wolin, will be joining them in the shop soon. (disclosure: I’m one of Wolin’s clients)

Azarian had another hair salon in the Media City, but closed it three years ago. However, she was not happy renting a station in a salon over on Burbank Boulevard. She likes working in a relaxed welcoming environment, so she decided to open her own place again. The mother of two and her husband arrived in the U.S. from Iran in 1991 with only $3,000. “This is the land of opportunity” said Azarian. “If you work hard,” she added, “… you can make dreams come true.”
