The hackers appear to be winning in the face-off with Sony Pictures. Today Sony canceled the Christmas Day release of the action comedy, “The Interview, ” after several major chains pulled the film from its theaters.
“In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers,” said a statement from the studio, posted on the Hollywood Reporter.
The cyber terrorists, calling themselves Guardians of Peace, hacked Sony last month and has been releasing sensitive documents, emails, and even pirated versions of some Sony films. Yesterday, the hackers threatened a “9-11” type attack on theaters that show “The Interview,” which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco. It’s about a couple of tabloid journalists who are recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. More here.
