Today is National Donut Day. Go ahead, have a sweet one or two or whatever. In celebration of the day, various businesses and retailers are offering freebies. I knew the line would be long at the Krispy Kreme in the Burbank Empire Center, 1521 North Victory Place where they’re giving away a free donut to anyone who asks for one. At that popular K-K outlet the lines are longer today than usual. This afternoon, a K-K staffer told me the wait time to be served is “three hours!” No joke.
I figured the K-K shop would be mobbed by folks — so I got my donut fix at the Donut Prince, 1721 West Olive Avenue here in Burbank. This is small business with a big reputation for very tasty donuts. When I dropped by this morning at around 8 a.m. there was a line out the door. However, it was not ridiculously long.

While standing in line, I talked with a few of the regulars and they told me the donuts were well worth the wait. Some have been coming here for more than 10 years. I bought a half a dozen, got one donut free as part of the everyday deals at the place. Yes, I agree the donuts are downright yummy. I didn’t get an “artificial flavor,” which is the case the last time I bit into a Krispy Kreme donut.
For more than 15 years, the Donut Prince has been owned by Tek and Betty. The little donut shop has a lot of fans, including some in the entertainment industry. In 2010 comedian, George Lopez, had a late night show and decided to have two producers make a commercial about the shop, the owners, and their motto, “Don’t get a divorce; get a donut.”
Oh, George Lopez did a cameo in that commercial.
