The late father of state Assemblyman, Mike Gatto, received a special honor today. A large street sign designating the t-intersection of West Silver Lake Drive and Rowena Avenue in Silver Lake as “Joseph Anthony Gatto Memorial Square” was unveiled this morning at around 8 a.m. Assemblyman Gatto missed the unveiling ceremony reportedly due to a canceled flight and the important budget vote in Sacramento today.

Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge hosted the event in his district, right next to Ivanhoe Elementary School, where he says “hundreds of kids walk along the sidewalk” and will see the new Gatto sign. LaBonge praised Joseph Gatto as a “great father, great artist,” and exceptional teacher who drove through the neighborhood streets for more than 40 years. LaBonge called Gatto’s murder 19 months ago, a “terrible crime.”
