Magnolia Boulevard is continuing to evolve into an interesting trendy place to hang out in Burbank. Last Friday evening with temperatures in the 90s, crowds braved the heat for “Ladies and Gents Night Out.” Local eateries and smoking food trucks provided a variety of menu items for the hungry. Along with store bargains, there was entertainment and artists at work, too.
Also this past weekend, a new hip, edgy business attracted attention and shoppers, while sparking curiosity and buzz. The shop is part of the $1 billion sneaker resale market and calls itself Magnolia Park or “Mag Park” for short.
“Mag Park” is at the corner of West Magnolia Boulevard and North Avon Street. Founder, Michael “Miki” Guerra, got his start in the business at Burbank’s Backside Records, which has been a supplier of new/used music and fashion since back in the early 1990s. Before opening a store on Magnolia Boulevard, Guerra and his crew developed a strong presence on social media — including several thousand followers on Instagram.
So it’s no surprise, when they threw a private preview party for celebrities, family, and friends, last Thursday, August 27, complete with valet parking, the line of folks to get into the store curved around the corner. Also, folks started lining up at 10 p.m. on Friday night to get into Magnolia Park for its grand opening last Saturday, August 29.
Guerra is thrilled with the location. He’s a fan of Porto’s and says all the “…antique and vintage stores (on Magnolia Boulevard were) a natural fit for us.” The shop does vintage with its own twist. It has a park theme running through it with painted murals on the walls and even a basketball court. The hip park vibe is enhanced by a onsite D.J. pumping out hot tracks.
I saw customers from all age groups browsing inside the shop last Saturday. Guerra says the shop’s gear and kicks appeals to wide range of clients from “toddlers to you know the old school basketball fans.”
There are a lot of hot sneakers out there now. Guerra says one of the most popular is hip hop superstar Kanye West’s Yeezy Boost 350 in black by Adidas.
The West sneaker was released last month on August 22 at a price of $200 a pair. They’re in stock at Magnolia Park for get this, $1,000 a pair!! Yeah that’s right, a grand. On opening weekend, Guerra says they sold five pairs of the Kanye West sneakers. Clearly, this kicks and gear shop is offering the kind of product a certain clientele is searching for and willing to pay major dough to get.
