No doubt the food trucks are a big draw on Ladies & Gents Night Out (yes, the name has been changed) the last Friday of each month in Burbank’s Magnolia Park. Last night more than 30 trucks lined Magnolia Boulevard between Hollywood Way and North Catalina Street, and spilled onto some side streets and Hollywood way as well. The most popular by far was the Cousins Main Lobster truck featuring some amazingly good food, especially those yummy lobster rolls. One woman told me she waited in a line, which stretched along the sidewalk on Magnolia and around the corner on North Avon Street, for an hour with no regrets.
The crowds flocked to Magnolia Boulevard on a balmy evening with temperatures in the 80s at around 6 p.m.. It was more than the Burnt To A Crisp Texas Smokehouse or Steamy Buns trucks that drew them. Also, the night is about searching for the new, the interesting, and the great bargains. Not every business is able to draw in these selective, potential customers, which has resulted in a number of the Magnolia Park merchants locking their doors on a night when literally hundreds of people are strolling the sidewalks until well after 9 p.m. Last night, I saw folks streaming into shops like Pinup Girl Boutique, Artesanos Home Accessories, Towns Burr Gallery, and Reclaimed New and Recycled Fashions.
This area of Magnolia Park is in a period of transition — some say it’s becoming cool and trendy. While, this works for many of the new arrivals — some of the long-established businesses are shutting their doors permanently like Peggy Woods Pet Emporium and the Jelly Bean Factory on Hollywood Way.
Meanwhile new businesses are preparing to open like the Hangar Grille at 3821 West Magnolia Boulevard in the old location of the former Bahia Caporales restaurant.
Again, this business district of Magnolia Park is going through some changes. We will have to wait and see what it turns out to be when everything settles down. I’m hoping for a wonderful blend of the old, like the retro and vintage shops, and the new arrivals — those with some style, pop, and great food!
