Like a mighty flood, “Noah,” rolled right over the competition in theaters to win the domestic box office derby. The final numbers came out today and they show “Noah” debuted in the top spot with $43.7 million. The film beat expectations and the doomsday predictions of critics.
Russell Crowe plays the biblical character ,Noah, who builds an ark to save his family and two of every species on Earth from the great flood, as God had commanded. The movie was criticized by some for not being a strict interpretation of the Old Testament story of Noah. Apparently, that was not an issue with moviegoers who turned out to see the epic.
The futuristic action/adventure, “Divergent,” slipped from first to second with $25.6 million. In third, the family comedy, “Muppets Most Wanted,” pulled in $11.2 million, followed in fourth place by the animation, “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” with $9 million, and rounding out the top five, the Christian drama, “God’s Not Dead,” with $8.7 million — bringing its two-week domestic total to $21.7 million.
