Pop singer Cyndi Lauper is having a lot of fun these days on Broadway. Lauper wrote lyrics and music for “Kinky Boots,” about a struggling shoemaker whose business gets a big turnaround when he switches over to producing fancy footwear for drag queens.
The musical is based on a true story, a 2005 film by the same name as well as a book by Harvey Fierstein. “Kinky Boots” opened this spring on Broadway and last Tuesday, received 13 Tony nominations the most of any production.
Cyndi Lauper, yes the singer of the 80s hit “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” got a nomination for best musical score. This is her first ever musical. More on the Tony nominations here. The 2013 Tony Awards broadcast is set for Sunday, June 9, on CBS.
