Long time Burbank business, Sheridan Gardens, nursery, gift, and home decor shop, abruptly closed its doors just over a week ago on Friday, February 20. It was a shock for the small group of employees who worked there as well as for devoted shoppers who had patronized the business for many years.
Since 1980, the nursery and the adjacent lot at Hollywood Way and Clark Avenue had been a tranquil retreat of trees, shrubs, plants, herbs, pretty posies, as well as gardening and landscaping supplies. Also, the gift and home decor shop offered a quaint place to browse for speciality items.
Local landscape designer, Betty Cahill, had been shopping at the Sheridan Gardens since she moved to Burbank more than 15 years ago.”I always enjoyed going there and buying top quality organic plants and garden products. And I loved their Christmas shop! Every year it’s been such a treat to walk into a Christmas wonderland,” Cahill told Media City Groove in an email.

However, when the family owned business lost its lease for the adjacent lot earlier this month, owners John and Susan Schachtner reportedly put the nursery on the market and it sold quickly. On Friday, February 20, shoppers rushed in to pick up some bargains.

Meanwhile, a crew moved out some of the stock and prepared to shut down the business at the end of the day.

Store manager, Arlene Lewis, says the five employees were given only a few days notice. Lewis had been with the company, which had two other locations at one point, since 1975. Cahill says the closure will “impact the community” and it affects her personally, “I will miss talking to Arlene about plants and trees, I will miss teaching Fairy Garden classes so much. I taught a few vegetable gardening classes there as well. It is indeed a sad day when the Mom and Pop places close down. It leaves us with limited choices…”
