Shout-outs
Some praise is deserved for the extremely popular and apparently very customer service savvy Porto’s Bakery at Magnolia Boulevard and Hollywood Way in Burbank. As I was leaving the bakery/eatery last Thursday night at closing time, I noticed an employee handing out bags of something at the door.

I asked the young lady with the bright smile about the bags. She told me her name is Alejandrina and that she was explaining to the late comers that the bakery was closed and offering each one a bag of Portio’s bread to ease the disappointment. Nice way to encourage customers to come again. When asked about her job, Alejandrina’s smile got even bigger and she said she’d been there a year and “I love it.” A high-five to Porto’s management for hiring Alejandrina and for a good customer service gesture.
A big congrats to Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, on the arrival of their new baby boy, His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis. Shortly before noon our time last Tuesday, the royal couple walked out of the private wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in London and introduce Baby Cambridge to the media and the world.

The infant is now third in line to the British throne, behind his father and grandfather, Prince Charles.
Right on, to the Washington, D.C. City Council,which had the guts to stand up to the bullying of Walmart, recently. Instead, of knuckling under to the retail giant, the city council passed the Accountability Act of 2013, which requires retailers with gross annual sales of more than $1 billion to pay workers $12.50 an hour versus the minimum wage ($8.25 in D.C.).
Walmart showed its true colors and told the council it would halt three planned stores in the District and rethink three more under construction . The D.C. council brushed off the threat and voted in the living wage act. This may just be the beginning of several similar battles in cities elsewhere for Walmart. More here.
I wonder what the D.C. council members are eating for breakfast? Wheaties maybe. Whatever it is, someone needs to feed it to several members of the Burbank City Council. You know the ones who have been singing the praises of Walmart — in the face of strong opposition from the community. Walmart is about to open some kind of Mega Store here in the Burbank Empire Center. The Burbank City Council needs to keep a close eye on the project to insure it lives up to the promises made by Walmart and doesn’t become the traffic-congestion nightmare so many fear it will be.
Call-outs
Thumbs down on politician, Anthony Weiner, for allowing his online sex habits to again become fodder for the media. In 2011, Weiner, then Representative from New York, was pressured into resigning from the House after a sexting scandal broke about lewd pictures he sent and chats he had with women online. Now, many apologies later, Weiner is running for mayor of New York — and there are now more revelations of his online sex stuff with women. He needs to drop out of the race, get out of the public eye, and get a fix for his problem. More here and here.
Forget it, Lance! The disgraced cyclist, Lance Armstrong, is trying to ease back into public life. Armstrong attended a cycling event earlier this week — the first for him since admitting, after lying about it for years, that he had indeed used performance-enhancing drugs.
