The future is looking brighter for the Haggen grocery store at 3830 West Verdugo Avenue in Burbank. This is one of the around 100 stores Haggen is selling off in an effort to right its struggling company, which filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in early September. Last month, Haggen announced Gelson’s had stepped up with an offer for Eight stores in California and Smart & Final signed an agreement for 28 stores — subject to the approval of the bankruptcy court. At that point, the Burbank store was not included in either deal — but that has apparently changed.
A chart of the bids for the stores on the auction block appears on The Registered-Guard website. The Oregon based newspaper’s chart shows a $2.75 million bid for the Burbank Haggen from Smart & Final. Also, Albertson’s is now in the bidding for some the stores it sold to Haggen back in last December.
Smart & Final, a warehouse, grocery and retail discount chain based in the city of Commerce, has two nearby locations one at 3708 West Burbank Boulevard in the Media City, and a newly renovated Glendale store at 1855 West Glen Oaks Boulevard.
