Hobby Lobby, the craft and home decor chain, is gearing up for the big opening of its new Burbank store early next month. A new sign has been installed at the entrance to the newly paved parking lot on North Victory Boulevard. Extensive renovation of the old OSH site has been done, but work continues on the structure.
Hobby Lobby’s grand opening in Burbank is set for next Friday, July 4th.
Meanwhile, the parent company is the focus of national attention because of a controversial case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The conservative Christian family of David and Barbara Green own Hobby Lobby. The Greens want their company to be exempt from the birth control mandate in the Affordable Care Act. The Greens claim certain contraceptive methods and devices violate their pro-life stance. However, this conviction has not stopped Hobby Lobby from allowing its employee retirement plan to invest in firms that produce the types contraception the Greens find objectionable.
A similar case was filed by furniture manufacturer Conestoga Wood Specialties, owned by Norman Hahn, a Mennonite. The high court is expected to hand down its ruling on both cases this coming Monday.
