The comic-book-to-movie trend in Hollywood continues to be pretty much a win-win situation with plenty of dollar signs. The latest comic book to hit the big screen is “Watchmen,” which opened with early morning showings yesterday. The result: “Watchmen” raked in an estimated $25 million on Friday. A great kick-off for the debut weekend of this superhero flick.
DC Comics published the vigilante thriller in a 12-book series back in the mid-1980s. It quickly gained a cult following and the interest of Hollywood. A film version of the superhero classic has been in the works for a couple of decades. Now that “Watchmen” is in theaters and making big bucks, you can bet more comic books will be snatched up for movie development.
Variety and Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily both have good posts today on the “Watchmen” and this weekend’s Box Office derby.
