Valentine’s Day is shaping up to be a money maker for florists if what I discovered at a couple of Burbank florists is any indicator. When I dropped by Samuel’s Florist on West Olive Avenue last Saturday, owner/floral designer, Donna Smith, was busy creating Valentine’s Day arrangements with shop floral designer, Karla Comayagua.

Smith is surprised at how many customers have come in or contacted her shop early to place their Valentine’s Day orders. Smith says she noticed at Christmas there were more “people buying flowers.” Once the holidays were over, folks got right into the swing of Valentine’s Day. A lot of her customers are repeats and many had ordered flowers for that special someone by last Saturday.
Apparently consumers are feeling secure enough about the new year to order early and spend generously. The most popular item: red roses. A dozen long stemmed roses at Samuel’s are $85.

Across B-town at The Enchanted Florist, 850 North Hollywood Way, shop owner, Kim Williams, has experienced the early shopping trend, too. Williams says customers are not waiting to the last minute to purchase Valentine’s Day flowers. She agrees red roses are still the hot go to gift, but the requests are growing for arrangements with roses mixed with other flowers as well as orchid plants, which can be dressed up to “fit the personality” of that special person.
At The Enchanted Florist, a dozen roses range in price from $95 to $125. Williams gushed about the roses she is receiving this season saying they have the “biggest heads” and best “petal counts.” Over at Samuel’s, Smith said she’s getting in gorgeous roses as well.
