I had a birthday a few days ago, and I regret not indulging in a Crumbs cupcake, one of the best on the planet. Now the chance for a repeat at that cupcakery is gone. The Crumbs Bake Shop at the Americana in Glendale has been shutdown and the phone disconnected. Apparently the New York-based chain has been struggling financially and yesterday folded.
Crumbs began as a mom-and-pop pastry shop in 2003 and grew to a chain of more than 40 shops with ambitious plans of expansion. However, the Crumbs empire has been “crumbling in recent months,” according to Business Insider. It must be the management because Crumbs cupcakes are truly heavenly, well worth the calories.
Generally, the reasonably priced Crumbs cupcakes were way larger than the standard ones at say Yummy’s on West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank or even the ones at Martino’s Bakery on North Victory in the Media City. Also, Crumbs had more than 50 varieties like Red Velvet, Brownie, Blackout, Devil’s Food, Carrot, Raspberry Swirl, Cookies & Cream, Toasted Coconut, Peanut Butter Cup, Vanilla Coconut, Vanilla/Chocolate Sprinkle, Chocolate Covered Strawberry, Chocolate Snowball, Coffee Toffee, Smore’s, and Dulce de Leche. Sigh, they’re just memories now.
Hopefully, this is not the last hurrah for Crumbs.
