Face covering enforcement goes into effect in Burbank today, Friday, October 16. A news release from the Burbank Police Department says the focus will be on certain areas, which received”… the majority of complaints… the Chandler Bikeway, downtown Burbank, the Magnolia Park business district, and City parks.”
The Burbank Police Department is taking a support role in the enforcement. The City of Burbank hired an outside firm, Willdan Engineering, to issue administrative citations. The Orange County firm provides technical and consulting services, with emphasis on safety and compliance, to cities and counties.
Willdan representatives will be handing out the citations. The first citation carries a fine of $100, $200 for a second offense, and $500 for any subsequent violation within a 12-month period.
Meanwhile, the BPD news release included this reminder: “All citizens are encouraged to wear face coverings when in public or in close proximity of others and to obey face covering requirements.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the city and the BPD tried to gain compliance for mask wearing through education. Yet, the complaints of violations continued. Officials are hoping the crackdown will convince more people to slip on face coverings here in the Media City.
