Federal agents are now investigating that huge fire, which gutted the Wholesale Giant, Inc., a large tobacco and cigarette business at 4410 West Victory Boulevard, between Manning and Dymond Streets, early yesterday. The fire alarm sounded at 3:30 a.m. as flames raced through the structure which was packed with merchandise including flammable butane containers used to refill cigarette lighters. The blaze raged until around 7 a.m. when Burbank Fire got the upper hand with help from agencies from surrounding cities — including South Pasadena and Glendale.
The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has joined the arson investigation into the cause of the blaze. Public Information Officer, Burbank Fire Captain Peter Hendrickson, told me today that the cause is “suspicious.” He says “a neighbor” reported seeing “someone throw” something into the store and then run away. Hendrickson says this prompted the decision to call in the Feds.
Hendrickson says at this point, they do not have a damage estimate.
