A lot of buzz today about the deletion of the residential component of the controversial NBCUniversal development project for Universal City. The media giant is moving forward with the 20 year “Evolution Plan,” but without the previous designs for an elaborate residential community of almost 3000 units along with retail shops … according to a report posted yesterday on Deadline.com. Apparently protests from communities like Burbank as well as Los Angeles City and County officials forced the NBCUniversal suits to re-think the project.
Here’s how President and COO of Universal Studios, Ron Meyer, put it in a statement:
“…after taking a hard look at the project, the current real estate market, our business needs and the needs of our surrounding communities, we believe it’s best to ask the City and County to focus on our 20-year plan without any residential development and to retain our backlot for production.”
Public hearings on the project reportedly are coming “soon.”
