Construction of a new parking lot in Burbank’s Magnolia Park has hit a snag. Work crews were busy at the lot on Magnolia Boulevard, between Maple and Kenwood Streets, back in early May. In fact, the pouring of the concrete, striping the parking spaces, and planting the landscape were expected to finish off the project by the end of the month. However when I dropped by the lot today, it was clear the project is far from complete.

It looked almost abandoned. In an email exchange today, Burbank Public Works Director, Bonnie Teaford, assured me that was not the case. “This parking lot is on LA DWP owned land, and that agency is now requiring a different kind of light pole than was originally contemplated. There’s a 6-to-8-week lead time for the poles, which has delayed the project a bit. In addition, our engineers required the contractor to do additional compaction, which delayed the paving a bit as well.”
Teaford says the paving should get underway next week. She expects the parking lot to be ready to open in August. Small businesses and local residents have long complained about inadequate parking in Magnolia Park. Some relief is on the way, but not until late summer.
