New shops on Magnolia Blvd. — some with issues. Your CBD Store Burbank opened its doors at 3106 West Magnolia Blvd. late last month. It’s part of a chain of affiliate stores in more than 25 states. There are reportedly 7 such stores in California.
On the website, it says “CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant which has many medical benefits.” Yet, the site has disclaimers. In response to its “medical benefits” claims: “The statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. The products are not intended for the cure, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man or animal.” Also this disclaimer: “At no point can we guarantee that a false positive on a drug test will not occur.”
CBD is derived from industrial hemp. Both hemp and the high-inducing marijuana come from the cannabis family, however, they have differences. Also, they are treated differently by the law… specifically Burbank City and the State of California.
Burbank senior planner Daniel Villa explains it this way: ” The major difference between the two is that industrial hemp has very low concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in cannabis that causes psycho-activity when smoked, ingested or applied. While cannabis has an average THC content greater than 20 percent, industrial hemp has less than three-tenths of one percent. While the retail sale of cannabis is prohibited by the BMC (Burbank Municipal Code), the retail sale of industrial hemp based products is allowed.”
Your CBD Store Burbank restriction
The Your CBD Burbank Store business application was approved by the city in February of 2019 for the sale of industrial hemp based products. There is a restriction. “While other stores nationwide named ‘Your CBD Store [Insert City Name Here]’ sell edible products, the Burbank location would be currently prohibited from selling them. This is in response to requirements from the California Department of Public Health, which currently prohibits the sale of food products that include CBD derived from industrial hemp – this includes edible pet products,” according to Villa. Still, the Burbank store advertises CBD supplements to be taken orally or mixed in beverages like orange juice as well as pet treats for animals.
Meanwhile, the other CBD business on Magnolia Blvd is only a few blocks away. Quanta opened last year. So far, its license is only approved for office use not retail sales. Nevertheless, there is concern more cannabis-based businesses will be popping up on Magnolia, thereby, changing the character of the street. The boulevard is known for its vintage stores, coffee shops, eateries, and small unique retailers. The question is how long will that be the case?
Goodwill Store on Magnolia
The American Way Thrift Store moved out months ago, but Goodwill has had some trouble taking over the building at 3226 West Magnolia Boulevard. Renovations stalled after the building got red tagged last March for permit violations. However, a “coming soon” sign went up recently in the window… so apparently they are trying to work things out with the city officials.
By the way, the new location for the American Way Thrift Store is nearby at 1220 West Magnolia Blvd.
AT&T Store moves into Magnolia Park
AT&T retail outlet opened up at 3520 West Magnolia Blvd. in the middle of last month. The new outlet offers an assortment of services from new phones, tablets, headphones to in-store activation to bill pay and small business solutions.
Several other stores are in the process of getting ready to open up on Magnolia Blvd. An update soon.
