A funeral service will be held later today for former-Burbank police cadet and Bakersfield Police Officer, David Nelson. The 26 year-old former Burbank High School graduate was killed in the line of duty last Friday, when his cruiser crashed during a police pursuit. In a statement from the Burbank Unified School District, Nelson is remembered as “… an intelligent, caring, funny, energetic, and hardworking young man who touched many lives.”
The service for Officer Nelson is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills , 6300 Forest Lawn Drive in Los Angeles. A procession to Forest Lawn Glendale for burial, gun salute, and presenting of colors reportedly will follow immediately after the service.
The suspect in the police chase, Julian Carlos Hernandez, was arrested last Saturday and arraigned on five felonies yesterday, according to The Bakersfield Californian. Meanwhile, donations for the Nelson family are being accepted at gofundme.com
City Hall departure
Another top level Burbank city employee has a new gig. Last month, Joy Forbes took on the position as the new v.p. global real estate planning and development for NBCUniversal. Forbes spent more than 15 years working for the Media City, most recently as the director of community development. More on MyBurbank and Burbank Leader.
School children vaccine law
Governor Jerry Brown has signed that tough controversial school children vaccine bill into law. Senate bill 277 nixes exemption for religious and personal beliefs, but allows for a child’s doctor to recommend against immunization. In a statement, Governor Brown said: “The science is clear that vaccines dramatically protect children against a number of infectious and dangerous diseases. While it is true no medical intervension is without risk, the evidence shows that immunization powerfully protects and benefits the community.”
Local Assemblyman, Mike Gatto, voted against the law and in an article on the LA Weekly website he called it “unconstitutional.”
