A tense stand-off drama played out on a street in Burbank this afternoon, when a suspect in a reported stolen car “refused to exit the vehicle,” according to Burbank Police Lieutenant, Eddie Ruiz. The incident began at around 2:38 p.m., when a Burbank PD patrol officer pulled over a 2013 silver Honda Fit after a license check revealed it had been reported stolen in West Los Angeles last night. It happened on Third Street between Palm Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard.
Lt. Ruiz says the driver “barricaded” himself in the vehicle. The area was cordoned off and multiple police units rushed to the scene, among them Burbank and Glendale SWAT as well as mental health and crisis negotiation teams. After a couple of hours of the stand-off, police fired “chemical agents into the car.” The chemical is an irritant and the suspect reacted by throwing some of his clothing out of a window.
He finally got out of the car, but reportedly did not comply with police instructions. Lt. Ruiz says the man was acting in a way that “was not normal behavior.”Then police hit the suspect with a less-lethal munition or a “foam round” and that “took him to the ground.”

Ruiz says a hood was placed over the suspect’s head to protect officers from his spitting.

At around 5 p.m. paramedics took the unidentified suspect to the hospital to be checked out. Two police cruisers were seen following the ambulance. No word yet, on what charges the suspect is facing.
