Burbank Police sent out a traffic alert about the opening of the new IKEA in the Media City today. The 456,000 square foot super-mega store is nearly twice the size of the old IKEA at the Burbank Town Center. The new IKEA is scheduled to open its doors to the public at 9 a.m. No doubt, a long line of devoted fans of the budget-furniture retailer will be waiting to be among the first to shop the new location.
Major traffic congestion is expected near the new IKEA, which is off of South San Fernando Boulevard between Providencia Avenue and Alameda Avenue. It sits on 22 acres adjacent to the I-5 freeway. The Swedish home furnishing giant reportedly paid $46 million for the spread back in early 2015.
IKEA officials claim 500 jobs were created during construction and more than 150 employees were added to the Burbank store staff.
The new store, at 600 South Ikea Way, is considered the largest IKEA in the country. Some of the features include, 50-room setting displays, three model home interiors, supervised children’s play areas, baby-care rooms, as well as a 600-seat restaurant. Also, on the lot — tons of parking, reportedly around 1,700 spaces.
IKEA is offering special giveaways and promotions at the new location. The first 26 adults in line get to take home a free sofa, according to Los Angeles Magazine. So if you’re not planning on checking out the new IKEA today you should probably avoid the area.
