The U.S. Supreme Court handed President Barack Obama a major victory today by upholding a major element of the controversial Affordable Care Act. In a 6-3 decision, the high court upheld the federal tax credits for low-income and middle class Americans who need  help paying  for health insurance. The broad ruling covers those in states with or without their own health exchanges or marketplaces. The administration considers the tax subsidies to be a linchpin in the health care reform law.

Despite efforts by opponents to gut the ACA, known as Obamacare, it has survived several major legal challenges. It is a sweet victory for President Obama and his administration. It appears Obamacare will be the historic legacy the president insisted it would be back in March of 2010 when he was signed into law. The president says the court ruling affirms “…in America health care is not a privilege for a few, but a right for all.” Here’s the president’s statement.
