The New York Liberty are WNBA champions for the first time in history. However, last Sunday’s title-winning game five left quite a bit of lingering controversy. In the Liberty’s 67-62 victory over the Minnesota Lynx, the referees’ foul call on Lynx forward Alanna Smith on Liberty forward Breanna Stewart had fans and players grumbling and complaining. Also, on Twitter, some fans pointed out that Stewart had done some serious traveling (maybe as many as four steps) before the controversial foul call.
I was just reviewing the foul heard around the world and realized it shouldn’t have even gotten there. I count 4 steps. What say you? Travel OR No? #WNBA #WNBAFinals pic.twitter.com/ix8GO6ryL3

The bottom line is the title belongs to the Liberty. We will have to wait until next season for a rematch. Hopefully, by then, the WNBA referees will have reviewed the controversial game and improved their performance.
