The all-important midterm election is less than two months away, and Democrats are winning a lot of support from voters. A poll released last Thursday reported the Democratic Party has an 11-point advantage over the Republican Party when it comes to who voters want to see win control of the United States House of Representatives. That’s according to a survey of registered voters by Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea-ack) University.
If the election were held today, 49% of voters said they wanted the Democrats to win control of the U.S. House. At the same time, 38% wanted the Republicans to keep the House majority. And 13% did not offer an opinion one way or the other. The Democrats appear to be gaining ground. In a poll last July by Quinnipiac, the margin was much closer. 48 percent of voters wanted the Democratic Party to win control of the House, while 41 percent preferred the Republican Party to stay in charge. 11% of voters did not offer an opinion.
As of August 26, 2026, Republicans control the House of Representatives by a slim majority. Republicans currently hold 218 seats while the Democrats have 214.
Meanwhile, President Trump continues to have high disapproval numbers among voters. Quinnipiac’s most recent poll was taken this month among 970 registered voters, from September 3-6. When asked about the President’s handling of his job, 33% approved, but 59% gave Trump’s job performance a thumbs down. 8% did not indicate an opinion.
