The process is underway to replace beleaguered former Burbank School Board member Charlene Tabet. At last Thursday’s School Board meeting, Interim Superintendent Oscar Macias announced that the night before, Tabet tendered her resignation.
Macias reminded the board that, under the California Education Code, it is required to either call a special election or appoint a replacement for the vacant seat within 60 days.
Tabet was elected to a four-year term, which runs through December 2026. After a discussion, the four board members decided not to call a special election due to the expense, but instead to make an appointment to fill the rest of Tabet’s term. The board plans to advertise the vacancy and solicit applications from candidates before moving forward with an appointment.
Tabet has not attended a board meeting since May 15, 2025. During the September 4 meeting, the board was scheduled to consider a resolution to declare her seat vacant. The California Education Code allows a school board member to be removed if they have not performed official duties for three consecutive months.
Meanwhile, Tabet is facing two investigations for allegedly being a major player in a contract scheme involving the school district and a company called Specialized Support Services. Details of the case appear on the school district website. So far, Tabet has not spoken publicly about the investigations or the alleged scheme.
