In case you didn’t know it — the donut or doughnut — that delicious hole in the center confection — is being celebrated today. Back in 1938, the Salvation Army declared the first Friday of June National Donut Day apparently to honor the women volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. Now the day is for anyone who enjoys those yummy munchies with the captivating aroma. Despite all the bad press about the calorie load in donuts — consumers gobble up thousands if not millions of them daily. If you’re incline to indulge today, there are places offering freebies on National Donut Day.

For example, Dunkin’ Donuts is offering customers a free donut with any beverage purchase. Meanwhile, Krispy Kreme is giving away a free donut to every customer  –no purchase required — today.  So go ahead — put your calorie counter on pause — eat one or two or more donuts today and pay homage to one of America’s favorite sweet treats.
