Hundreds of protesters turned out in Burbank this weekend to take part in a nationwide action against ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) tactics and violence. Also, they were showing solidarity with the pushback and fight to remove ICE from Minnesota, where two U.S. citizens were killed by federal agents recently. Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, and Renee Good, the mother of three, were both shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis last month.
While here in SoCal, ICE raids, arrests, and detention of immigrants, as well as some U.S. citizens, have caused tension, anger, and outrage. Indivisible Burbank, a local arm of a nationwide grassroots movement, organized these protests. Their focus is on preserving democratic principles and stopping the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S.
Last Friday, the demonstrators lined both sides of East Olive Avenue in front of Burbank City Hall. They waved signs and banners demanding change and condemning ICE and the government for supporting it. The battle cry was “ICE Out everywhere.”

On Saturday, January 31, a large protest against the ICE crackdown took place at the busy intersection of North Buena Vista Street and West Olive Avenue in the Media City. Despite temperatures well over 80 degrees, the participants chanted, waved signs, and marched in the crosswalks for at least two hours. The participants ranged from young children to senior citizens.
