The big reopening bash for the Canyon Grille restaurant at the DeBell Golf Club on East Walnut in Burbank is this evening. The Canyon Grille has been open only a few months and is already a vast improvement over its predecessor, the very marginal Clubhouse Grill.
The Canyon Grille has the potential to be a notable eatery in the Media City, but there are still some bumps and rough spots that need attention. Last Sunday, my husband and I had lunch at the C-G. The prices are reasonable and overall, it was a nice experience.
The restaurant was teeming with customers, something I had not seen at the Clubhouse Grill. The weather was sunny and warm, so we sat out on the patio and enjoyed the stunning and peaceful views of the DeBell Golf Course. The views and the serene setting are huge pluses for this restaurant.
The wait staff was pleasant and a bit disorganized. We ordered the starter shrimp tacos, which apparently were forgotten. When our lunch orders arrived, we asked about the shrimp tacos and were told there was some problem in the kitchen. A few minutes later, our smiling waitress arrived with the tacos — three on the plate — small but tasty.

I had the honey chicken brie sandwich with salad and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The chicken portion was generous. Both sandwich and salad were good. On the other hand, my husband’s meal was okay. He had the tuna sandwich and soup special. The tuna was rather bland, but the chicken and rice soup was very good.
We had strawberry lemonades to drink and they were disappointing. On the menu, the strawberry lemonade is advertised as having “fresh strawberry chunks.” Ours had maybe specks of strawberries and a weak flavor. My husband says the strawberry lemonade is much better at Bob’s Big Boy over on Riverside Drive. Over there, they give you unlimited refills of the strawberry lemonade, which is not the case at C-G.
While we were at the C-G, we heard a lot of excited chatter from the staff about the grand reopening. I hope some of the kitchen and staffing issues get solved before the crowds arrive for that special event. It runs from 5-7 p.m. with music, food tasting, and a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. The affair is free and the public is invited. Donations will be accepted for the renovation of the Veterans War Memorial Wall at McCambridge Park in Burbank. The Burbank Chamber of Commerce is co-hosting with Debell Golf Club.
By the way, Canyon Grille is operated by Tom Shayman, the owner of the Burbank Bar and Grille restaurant in Downtown Burbank.
