Awards Season

The recent 83rd Golden Globes ceremony might offer clues about the names and titles that will be announced on Thursday, January 22, when the Oscar nominations are revealed. The thriller/action/comedy One Battle After Another received the most nominations, 9, and won 4 Golden Globes, including best motion picture comedy or musical. The evening’s other major award, for best motion picture drama, went to Hamnet, a saga about William Shakespeare’s family. Hamnet was nominated for six Globes and won two. The second win was for best actress in a drama, picked up by Jessie Buckley.
Sinners, the vampire-Jim Crow thriller, received seven nominations and won two: the prize for best original score and the Globe for cinematic and box-office achievement. Sinners was a hit at the box office and a standout with the critics. During the Hollywood awards season, the horror/action drama netted a slew of awards nominations and wins. So Sinners, along with Hamnet and One Battle After Another, are getting predictions of numerous Oscar nominations.
The bottom line is there is no way to know at this point whether the predictions are valid. We’ll have to wait and see what happens on Thursday, when the Oscar nominations are announced, to see if the Golden Globes offered any hints about whose name or movie title will be called or left off the list.
