A double clean-up for some Southlanders today, after a moderate earthquake struck during the height of tropical storm Hilary. The shaking surprised many and rattled nerves already frayed by the stormy weather.
The quake hit at 2:41 pm yesterday. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was located 4.3 miles southeast of Ojai. The shaking went on for several seconds and was felt throughout the Southland, including here in Burbank. It measured 5.1.
In Ojai, reports of items knocked off shelves and scattered about in stores and homes. However, no reports of injuries. There have been more than 20 aftershocks.
The shaker quickly got the nickname “hurriquake.” Some wondered if a relationship between the storm and the earthquake really existed. Seismologist, Dr. Lucy Jones, went on social media to debunk that notion: “There is no correlation between the earthquake and the tropical storm. Just a coincidence that is a good reminder that disaster resilience is a multi-hazard endeavor.”
