Extreme heat in Burbank– cooling centers open

Fans and air conditioners were going full blast all over Burbank today. The mercury soar to a blazing 100 degrees. The high humid — over 50 percent at times — made going outside difficult to bear.  We’re used to dry heat — not the sticky humid conditions we had today.  More of the same ahead, at least through tomorrow.   Due to the […]

Guest Blogger: The weather, life, and happy days

There’s a proverb that says that having clear and sunny days all the time creates deserts. Of course everybody wishes to have bright and happy days all the time, but if every single day was like that, we could forget what happiness is. It is natural for there to be rain, snow, wind, thunder, and lightning on some days and […]

New York City prepares for the wrath of Irene

In an unprecedented move, New York City has nearly shut down in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Irene today. Despite the dire warnings and evidence of what Irene has done to other parts of the East Coast this weekend, some New Yorkers in places like Coney Island are refusing to leave their homes. At least nine deaths on the East Coast are […]

A scorcher in Burbank today

Another hot one in Burbank and the rest of the Southland today. The temperatures are expected to soar into the mid-90s — even the triple digits by this afternoon in B-town. Before noon the mercury had reached 93 here.  Also, we will get some partly cloudy skies at times with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.  And we got high humidity! A large ridge of […]

Another hot, hot day in the Media City

The sun is going to be roasting Burbank again today. I made the mistake of going to the Downtown Post Office on East Olive Avenue at around 4:15 yesterday afternoon. If you thought it was sticky hot outside — well, it was more so inside that historic old building without air conditioning!!! Postal workers and customers were sweating in what felt like an oven. […]

City Buzz: A suspect and a victim in a series of Burbank residential burglaries, needy kids’ camp fund, and more sunny skies ahead

New developments in that series of residential burglaries in Burbank.  Last Friday, Burbank Police announced the arrest of a suspect, 37-year-old Ericka Valladares of Los Angeles, and the recovery of some of the stolen items. Hillside resident Yvonne Smith’s home was burglarized last December. She went down to the BPD headquarters a few days ago and “was delighted” that some of […]

June gloom and some sunshine over the weekend

Weather alert !!  The infamous SoCal June gloom of cloudy skies with light mist, which seems more like light rain –is going to hang around through at least the weekend. Along with the overcast skies, temperatures will be on the cool side — the highs in the upper 60s — maybe even 70 or so in B-town. The good news — we’ll probably get some sunshine and an […]
