British singer/Grammy nominee Leona Lewis
Something new for the Grammy nominations. Last night, the Recording Academy announced the 51st Annual Grammy nominations during a televised live concert on CBS. The star-studded affair took place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
Most of the media attention went to hip-hop artist/rapper Lil Wayne, who got eight nominations; Coldplay received seven; and Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Ne-Yo will be up for six. However, I was most thrilled to see veteran soul crooner Al Green and new British singer Leona Lewis up for several Grammys.
You might not remember the name, but who can forget Lewis’ powerful version of “Bleeding Love,” which rocked the pop charts worldwide for months. “Bleeding Love” was on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for 39 weeks — four of them at number one. Leona Lewis is up for Best Pop Album for “Spirit” and Best Pop Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Bleeding Love.”
There are 110 categories. The Grammys in some of those categories will be handed out at the awards ceremony on February 8, 2009, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
